Lanc West Grows Best with Hubbub

We were privileged to design and build one of many interventions intended to support the neighbours of Grenfell Tower.

The work was commissioned by the amazing campaigning group Hubbub, who have also created a detailed report about the project here. We consulted with residents to co-design a range of elements for the more than 200 square metres of communal space. A primary feature was the polytunnel, which enables year-round growing and significant food harvests. Other highlights included a pond to support biodiversity and enable children to explore nature on their doorstep, as well as a fungi woodland zone.

Purpose: To revitalise a disused area on the estate, turning it into a thriving food growing space co-created and used by the community. And to provide therapeutic spaces for the neighbours of Grenfell Tower.

    The pond and raised beds were designed to integrate seating to make a multi sensory space of leisure as well of productivity.

    We added to existing benches with wooden structures around the mature trees, and made the polytunnel something to walk through for everyone to admire the plants growing there.

    The refurbished space has encouraged more interaction between residents, and is an ideal space for events.
