We designed a mobile green space that can adapt from a community garden to a thriving market place in Thornton Heath. It was our biggest installation to date: more complex logistics, more visibility, more carpentry and more partners than any other project. The installation had been delayed by C-19, and we had to massively reduce our ambitions for community involvement. Play Nice is a company that specialises in marketing and communications. The idea for the space was curated from the outcomes and lived experiences following the Covid19 pandemic. Residents were involved with every stage of the design process, deciding on layout, materials and planting choices. When it came time to install, residents planted most of the several hundred plants we laid out for them. And we continued to support Caldwell Gardens for several years afterwards through the Council’s Edible Living program, growing food with residents in some of the beds, while others developed into beautiful, biodiverse areas supporting local pollinators and birds. Sadly, over the years, the garden had become neglected. The wooden raised beds and benches were rotting and falling apart and fly-tipping in the garden had become an issue. The much-loved vegetarian brand Linda Mccartney Foods, supported the creation and expansion of community gardens across the UK as part of their 30th-anniversary celebration. We were thrilled to have joined forces with Linda McCartney Foods, Lambeth Council, and The Remakery to redesign Paulet Estate’s Community Garden (located between Brixton and Camberwell) using sustainable and recyclable materials. We ran an online focus group “Young Earth Champions” and invited local youth groups as well as young families, on Earth Day to help create the garden. Since the site was transformed, we’ve hosted hundreds of volunteers plus dozens of residents and Remakery members to continuously improve the site. We’ve also hosted our friends from Social Landscapes as part of their Permaculture Design Courses. We’ve got a greenhouse and vertical herb garden as well as mushroom towers producing food for all to share. We collaborated with our long-term partner at Action Now, to build the hammocks, bench and play structures. As we were doing the installation, lots of residents came out to investigate, and many of them got involved with the planting. Since then, we helped to establish a residents’ watering rota, to ensure the plants settle in well in their first year. The front of the pub is north facing, and under the shadow of a lovely Ash tree with glowing yellow autumn foliage. So the choice of plants was slightly limited to shade-tolerant evergreens with a largely upright structure, so as not to crowd out the punters. More and more businesses are recognising the importance of having plants throughout the spaces they manage, for the benefit of clients and employees. As part of our commitment to sustainability, we are always keen to teach people new skills that allow them to make their own Christmas presents. It fundamentally changes our relationship with consumer goods when we are directly involved with their creation. We were happy to have the opportunity to teach people some new skills at Sample Festival, along with dozens of other independent traders showing off their skills and beautiful goods. Staff from the Hoxton Hotel helped out on day 1, transforming the existing lean-to into a greenhouse, extending some raised beds, clearing the weeds and fixing the compost bin. We also took the opportunity to plant up the Jubilee community hall garden. There was an unloved area and we planted some drought-tolerant plants to add some colour. On a lovely warm Tuesday evening, we had Goodgym volunteers come to help weed the path and spread mulch. We also managed to rebuild the raised bed that was rotting. The brief was not easy! We had to install a garden that would be looking its best, camera-ready, at the end of October. Luckily, our suppliers at Wyevale were able to pick out the best-looking plants in the days before delivery, and ensured that the autumnal colours were blazing! The build took place over three days, on the last of which Loyle joined us for the planting, and so we could talk him through the design and the specific plants. Over 4 days we transformed 3 different areas in this centre that supports families and young people out of poverty. Over the course of the 4 days we had help from HSBC corporate volunteers organised by Cardinal Hume. We were commissioned to redesign the space, which involved quite a few elements: Clear and restructure the existing community food growing area, which was filled with broken planters & clutter. Design & install a new bin storage area, to cover the 5 large dumpsters that have to sit by the entrance. Replace the existing lighting pillars with new ones & install bike racks. Clear and replant the steep, sloping banks at the front of the building. Remove significant amounts of green waste and replant the hedge boundary to provide screening from the street. Remove a dead tree and maintenance-prune others on-site. The East London Liquor Company garden already had attractive corten planters forming a courtyard and covered walkway, but many of the plants were struggling. We hosted over 30 volunteers from amazing organisations committed to lower carbon, more sustainable economy. This provided an opportunity for us to test our abilities at the largest flower show in the world, with the country’s top landscapers. We started with 40 sqm of a blank canvas. It was not without its challenges, but the final product was worth it – and the judges awarded it a silver. Every inch of space matters in London, and having somewhere to entertain clients outside makes a big difference to urban businesses. We were brought into a neglected, grey space, with the brief to make it green, soft, inviting and relaxing. We commissioned bespoke steel planters, powder coated in the colour chosen by the client, and assembled them on site. Some had to be on wheels, to ensure access to utility panels. And they were all connected to an irrigation system to ensure consistent growth and minimal maintenance required. Plant choices were also chosen to be lush, green and low maintenance, suited to the shady space. The windy corner was attracting anti-social behaviour and litter. We were asked to create a beautiful and robust garden that would design out the potential for crime and make the area more appealing to commuters & residents. We commissioned custom cut steel containers from our friends at Everedge, with irregular sides to account for the sloping ground. We assembled these on site along with the bespoke trellis designed to prevent access to the recess behind it. It fuelled Britain’s Industrial Revolution as goods from around the country made their way to London’s docks, whilst the raw materials which made such a revolution possible arrived from around the world, and travelled in the opposite direction. These days, the canal serves a different purpose; as a home to London’s boater community, a pleasant route to work for commuters, and a great recreational resource for tourists and locals alike. What made these jobs even more interesting is that both gardens were on the same Tulse Hill housing estate. Mosaic Clubhouse are neighbours of ours in Brixton, who provide support and opportunities to people living with a mental health condition. So when they expressed a desire to grow more food and make the most of their outdoor spaces, we wanted to help. Using funding from the Trust for London, we built an 8-foot-long greenhouse, and a long raised bed made of sleepers, in their under-used courtyard. Incredible Edible Lambeth had identified this as a high-visibility place with unfulfilled potential. The large concrete planters were overgrown with unhealthy shrubs, and we collaborated with Fire Station staff to rip out the old plants and replace them with attractive crops, aromatics and edible flowers. We were approached by the Stones End Day Centre to brighten up their outdoor space for summer, and to try to reinvigorate the indoor displays which had mysteriously collapsed. Participating GPs would prescribe gardening activities for patients struggling with physical or mental health problems. Most participants were elderly or not working due to ill health. Most were socially isolated and doing little physical activity. For nine months of each year we would grow food at their GP surgery or, in one case, in the grounds of Kings College Hospital. We worked with over 150 students from across south London, explaining to them the importance of plants in our everyday life, and demonstrating the range of careers which they influence. On each of the two days, a current course learner or graduate joined Bruno as a teaching assistant, to talk about their experiences and broaden their own horizons. This work was made possible by funding from the Trust for London. After a successful set of weekly workshops in the spring and summer terms, we expanded our education program to cater for their pupils in Key Stage 4 (14-16 years old). We offered them a suite of Entry and Pre-Entry level qualifications via AQA. By the end of the school year, each participant had a series of credits to help them progress into the workplace when they left school. We produced design packs for each one of them, and also made paper copies available to ensure nobody suffered from digital exclusion, even in the second spring of the pandemic. We were asked to transform it into a place that supported patient wellbeing and encouraged calm dwelling rather than just passing through. We wanted to add multi-sensory planting for year round interest, which can be tricky with such limited light. Working with other project partners, we updated the original design and layout of the different elements in order to make the most of the limited sunlight in the courtyard. The advantage of the enclosure was that scent and sound from the garden were amplified. We worked closely with centre staff to understand the priorities of their residents. We explored outdoor games, sheltered spaces including a greenhouse and multi-sensory elements including a pond with fountain. Over three weeks in late autumn we conducted the works, adapting things last minute in response to client requests. We conducted long running community engagement and collaborative design activities to enthuse residents about the food growing and biodiversity measures in the design. We then installed the soft landscaping during the construction phase, including participatory planting sessions with residents. The project was made possible by funding from the Mayor of London’s Greener City Fund program and the Trust for London. And we couldn’t have done it without the hundreds of corporate volunteers who got muddy with us over the course of the year long project. We were also delighted to host local organisations who provide specialist support to vulnerable groups such as ethnic minority women and girls, children and adults with learning disabilities, as well as summer youth clubs. Residents are invited to pitch ideas that will make public spaces near them better for people and nature, and grants are awarded to the winners. We helped to assess the applicants, and at the time of writing are supporting two winning groups to make their dreams a reality.
